How Safe Is Prague Compared with Other European Cities?

Safety is one of the first questions families ask when considering a new city.
For Prague, the useful question is not whether it is “the safest city in Europe”. Such rankings depend on methodology and can change from year to year.
A better approach is to understand the risks that residents and visitors actually encounter.
Everyday risks
Prague is a major European capital and tourist destination. Its common urban risks include:
pickpocketing in crowded tourist areas;
theft of unattended belongings;
bicycle theft;
theft from cars;
problems connected with nightlife and alcohol;
scams aimed at tourists.
These are ordinary city risks, not a reason to treat Prague as a crime-free environment.
Tourist centre and residential neighbourhoods
The historic centre has a different atmosphere from a residential district.
Around areas such as Staré Město, Charles Bridge and other major tourist attractions, crowds create opportunities for opportunistic theft.
A family choosing a residential district should evaluate the actual street rather than relying on the reputation of the city.
Visit the area:
during the day;
after dark;
during the weekend;
and, if possible, during bad weather.
The same street can feel very different at 8 p.m. from how it feels at noon.
Public transport
Public transport is an important part of Prague life.
Families should teach children ordinary urban safety rules: keeping valuables secure, knowing where they are going, and knowing how to contact a parent if they become separated.
Night-time travel should be planned according to the person's age and familiarity with the city.
What “safe” should mean for a family
Instead of asking only about crime statistics, consider:
Can my child get from school to home?
Is the route well connected?
Is the building entrance secure?
What is the street like after dark?
How easy is it to reach home without a car?
Those questions are much more relevant to residential life than a generic European safety ranking.
